Dental Implants

2026/08/11

Dental implants can be a reliable option for replacing missing teeth and are effective in preserving long-term oral function and restoring esthetic outcome. Whether replacing a single tooth, multiple teeth, or an entire dental arch, dental implants are designed to closely mimic the function and appearance of natural teeth.

What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants usually consist of two parts. The first is the implant fixture that goes into your jaw bone and acts as the support for the tooth that will be attached to it. They are usually made of biocompatible materials such as titanium and are surgically placed into the jaw bone and will integrate with the bone over time.

The second part is the implant crown, which is the part replaces the missing tooth. The implant crown is connected to the implant fixture with a screw or may be cemented to an abutment, and can be function and look like a natural tooth.

Benefits of Dental Implants

Dental implants offer several benefits over other tooth replacement options such as dentures and bridges. They provide a fixed, long-term solution to replacement of missing teeth without involving the use of adjacent natural teeth to support the prosthesis. They simulate the appearance and function of natural teeth, allowing patients to eat and speak with confidence. Implants can also be used in dentures to improve the retention and stability of the denture, proving greater comfort to the patient . They also provide an aesthetic benefit by eliminating the need for clasps on the denture.

Suitability for Dental Implants

Patients must have adequate bone quantity and good overall oral health to support the implant. Patients with certain medical conditions such as those who have gone through head and neck radiation therapy and uncontrolled diabetes may not be eligible for dental implants. To ensure long-term success, supplementary procedures such as bone grafting may be necessary in conjunction with dental implant surgery. Consult our dental professionals to determine if dental implants are suitable for you.

Dental Implant Procedure

The dental implant procedure is typically done in stages:

Consultation and Treatment Plan

The first step involves detailed consultation and assessment. During this appointment, the dentist will assess your general health, oral condition and site for implant placement. Diagnostic images such as cone bean CT scan (3D x-ray) will also be taken to help evaluate bone volume and the proximity of vital structures to determine the suitability of implant treatment.

Implant Placement

During the procedure, a small opening is created in the gum tissue to access the jawbone. The titanium implant fixture is then carefully inserted into the bone at the planned position. After placement, the implant is left to heal and integrate with the surrounding bone over a period of several months for long-term implant stability. In cases where bone volume is deficient, there may be a need for bone graft procedures to increase bone volume around the implant fixture.

Prosthesis Connection

A mould or scan of the implant fixture(s) is made to fabricate a custom-made prosthesis (crown or bridge). The final prosthesis can be screwed or cemented onto the dental implant.

Possible Problems Encountered with Dental Implants

  • Material chipping or fracture.
  • Screw loosening or fracture.
  • Crown or bridge dislodgement.
  • Bone loss, loose or shaky implant.
  • Bleeding, pus discharge and tenderness, swelling of the soft tissue around the implants.

    Aftercare for Dental Implants

Proper recovery and aftercare are essential to ensure successful healing and longevity of dental implants.

Following implant placement, patients may experience mild swelling, discomfort, or sensitivity for several days. Pain medication and cold compresses may be recommended to manage temporary symptoms.

    Patients are generally advised to:

    • Consume soft foods during the initial healing period.
    • Avoid smoking and alcohol consumption.
    • Maintain good oral hygiene.
    • Avoid excessive pressure on the implant area.
    • Attend scheduled follow-up appointments.

It is also important to practice good oral hygiene and schedule regular dental checkups for proper maintenance of your dental implant. Clean the dental implant in the same way as you would around your natural teeth. This includes brushing and interdental cleaning with a floss or interdental brush. If you notice bleeding gums or swelling on your implant, you should schedule a visit with your dentist for a check.
