From the wards of our Main Building to the offices in Cocoon and the green spaces across our campus, sustainability is woven into every corner of Alexandra Hospital. The map below showcases our sustainability journey across the campus, spanning the Main Building, the Cocoon, and the wider campus grounds.
Alexandra Hospital's sustainability governance is aligned to the NUHS Green Taskforce and Joint Commission Internation Global Health Impact (GHI) Chapter, spanning two levels from cluster strategy to hospital action.
The Sustainability Committee, led by the Chief Operating Officer, brings together Facilities, Support Operations, and Job Group Leads to drive sustainability efforts across all hospital functions. Here is how our focus areas translate into action on the ground:
Empowering every staff member to go green
Sustainability is everyone's responsibility at AH. We engage our staff through a range of learning and experiential activities, including corporate events and community outreach such as environmental field trips and visits to sustainability facilities. These activities help build awareness and foster a shared commitment to greener practices.
Our Job Group Leads across all departments also drive green action from the ground up, supported by the HEAL (Healthcare Emissions Action Lab) simulation — a hands-on learning experience that brings sustainability decisions in healthcare to life.
Integrating sustainability into how we care
Sustainability is woven into the way we deliver care. In our wards and internal events catering, we have introduced lower-carbon menu options and removed red meat, reducing the carbon footprint of food served across the hospital.
In our operating theatres, we have phased out desflurane and nitrous oxide, potent greenhouse gases as part of the NUHS cluster commitment to eliminate their use entirely. We also continuously review other clinical pathways to reduce our environmental footprint without compromising patient outcomes.
Whether you are a patient, visitor, or staff, there are many ways to be part of our green journey. Find out how you can contribute to a more sustainable Alexandra Hospital.
