Meet Our Pharmacists and Pharmacy Technicians

Chan Shi Mun

Pharmacist

Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much - Helen Keller

As a hospital pharmacist, I contribute to safe, effective and economical medication use through collaborative prescribing, providing drug information service and working in partnership with my fellow colleagues in the multidisciplinary One-Care-Team. Within our pharmacy team, I work collectively with my colleagues to groom young budding pharmacists.

Lifelong learning is crucial in this dynamic healthcare sector; I hope to be able to inspire young pharmacist to stay current in today's era of rapidly evolving medical advances. It is also exceptionally rewarding to see my patients being empowered to take charge of their health and medications.

Last but not least, we strive to promote safe, effective and economical use of medications.

Khairil Nazir Bin Salim

Senior Pharmacy Technician

Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better - Maya Angelou .

This quote sums up my personal work culture here in Alex. Never stop giving your best what I do, even then there is always room for improvement.

As a Senior Pharmacy Technician assigned to the night shift, my duties revolve around Urgent Care Centre (UCC) and Inpatient care setting after office hours. One of my core duties for UCC is to process and check prescription that our UC doctor had ordered. After which picking/packing and dispensing of the medication with proper counselling towards the patient. The prescriptions vary in their complexity, ranging from a strip of Panadol to 10 different types of chronic medication.

Aside from UCC, I also attend to Inpatient settings. This comes in the form of nurse medication request, where medication that is not available at ward will need to be resupplied via the inpatient pharmacy. These medications will be packed and sent up in a timely manner using our portering services, thus ensuring that our patients can get their medication served on time. Since UCC is 24/7, I also receive phone calls from members of the public. Most of the time these phone calls are from our patients or their families, calling to enquire on their usage of medication etc. Such services are most beneficial for our patients as sometimes all they need is assurance from us.

As I wear many hats and cover a variety of roles and responsibilities to cater to our patient's needs, being able to juggle different aspects of the job is important towards providing a better healthcare service and experience for our patients. Providing a human touch in our duties is vitalas such a gesture can sometimes have a profound impact on our patient. I recall during one of my duties, a patient called as he was unsure whether he needed to come to UCC for a stomach issue he was having. He was unable to make a decision as to whether he needed to see a doctor, or if he could consume OTC medication.  Withing the next 1.5 hours, he called twice with follow up questions and for further reassurance.

At the end of the phone call, he apologised as all he needed was a listening ear regarding his condition. This incident shows that sometimes our patients require someone to listen and assure them. This, to me, is why my duties are important and I do what I do best.
