At a farewell celebration for a friend, I heard a story that stayed with me. When one of his assistants was asked what she would remember about him, she said, “Once I had to deliver a difficult message to him – that the hard deadline for a critical project would be missed. I didn’t know him well then and was sure he would be very upset with me and the team. I braced myself for his wrath. After all, what do you expect your boss to say when you’ve failed him?”
He replied, “Ok, thanks for trying.”
I didn’t know what to make of such a response and asked, “Are you not angry? Do you not want an explanation from us?” He answered, “If it could be done, you would have done it.”
She went on to say, “I was deeply moved by the trust. The genuine and absolute trust that I would bring my best to my work makes me certain that this is where I can be my best.”
