The Department of Laboratory Medicine at Alexandra Hospital is staffed by highly skilled Medical Laboratory Technologists and Medical Laboratory Scientists responsible for performing analysis of biological specimens to generate laboratory results that aid diagnosis, treatment and monitoring. The laboratory is College of American Pathologist (CAP) accredited, and is committed in delivering reliable, timely and accurate laboratory results.
The Laboratory provides the following disciplines:
Medical Laboratory Technologists and Medical Laboratory Scientists play an essential role in Singapore’s healthcare system. They perform a wide range of diagnostic tests on blood, tissues, and other body fluids to aid in the detection, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases. Working behind the scenes in hospitals and laboratories, they use complex equipment and techniques to deliver accurate and timely results. To pursue a career in laboratory medicine, individuals must obtain either a relevant diploma or degree in biomedical science or medical laboratory science. With continuous advancements in technology and medical research, this profession offers strong career prospects, opportunities for growth, and the potential to contribute meaningfully to patient outcomes and public health.

"My experience at Alexandra Hospital has been an enriching journey. Not only was I sponsored to study abroad, but I’m also fortunate to have a network of supportive colleagues that I can rely on during challenging times. I take great pride in the inclusive and respectful working environment that the organisation has cultivated, where I am valued, treated fairly, and encouraged to voice my thoughts without fear.” – Esther Tay
As a medical laboratory scientist, a typical day for Esther at work will be performing various laboratory tests on patient's samples, which include biochemistry, haematology, microbiology and blood bank analysis. These tests are carried out by following specific protocols and using specialised equipment. Her daily routine includes calibrations and quality checks on equipment to ensure their accuracy and precision, validation of test results and looking out for any abnormalities to ensure that results are accurate for proper diagnosis and patient care.
After result validation, doctors will then be able to view the test reports in the hospital laboratory information system and make informed decisions about patient care. For critical results, she also notifies the doctors so that they can make prompt patient management decisions.
“Performing a wide range of diagnostic tests is important because the right diagnosis is the first step in providing appropriate treatment plans and medical interventions for patients. Screening tests help to identify risk factors and early indicators of diseases, while routine tests track disease progression and treatment effectiveness, especially for patients with chronic conditions. Laboratory tests that involve identifying pathogens also play a crucial role in managing outbreak, infection control, and public health surveillance.” – Esther Tay
Apart from the routine laboratory test analysis, Esther and her team also works to maintain the laboratory accreditation by ensuring compliance with regulatory standards through regular audits and quality assurance programmes – all of which are essential to safeguard patient safety.
In addition, Esther participates in continuing education and training programmes to stay up to date with the latest developments in laboratory medicine and technology. She also takes an active role in training and educating laboratory staff and interns. She enjoys these engagements as it allows her to share her knowledge, expertise and best practices that would be beneficial to the overall healthcare environment.
